BELIZE FLY FISHING ADVENTURE
East Coast Booking Agent for EL PESCADOR FISHING LODGE
Ambergris Caye, Belize C.A.

By our calculation this was the 12th consecutive year we've made the stunning country of Belize the focus of our annual autumn fly-fishing vacation. It's not specifically one thing that motivates us to return on a yearly basis, but rather a variety of things. The hospitality and service extended to us by our host lodge, El Pescador, located on beautiful Ambergris Caye in northern Belize is simply without compromise. The year round sight fishing opportunities that are afforded their guests is undoubtedly world class. The impeccable accommodations, lodge facilities and dining arrangements unquestionably contributed to Forbes Traveler's rating El Pescador a top ten eco-tourist destination in the world.

I wish we could report that our most recent holiday was blessed by excellent fishing, it was not, the fishing was simply spectacular! While I've never considered myself a fish counter, jumping a tarpon with a fly rod is such a impressive event that you tend to commit every episode to memory. It's not difficult to recount the day's activities in terms of fish jumped and fish landed, a personal score card of sorts. By week's end, and if my math is correct, in excess of two-dozen tarpon went airborne attached to my shock tippet with an even dozen brought to hand. The largest specimen was a guide estimated 50 pounds, with most others falling within the 20-30 lb. category.

While tarpon seized my attention for much of the week, I did manage a few hours of bonefishing and can attest that the fishery is in good stead. While certainly not the proportion of their Bahamian cousins bones were plentiful and more then accommodating offering great sport when the tarpon fishing became a bit too tedious, even with my aptitude for patience.

While other lodge guests landed a number of permit, mainly with light tackle, our days spent on deeper flats, creeks and lagoons did not present much opportunity to pursue these magnificent creatures as only a few isolated schools were witnessed throughout the week, never within a double haul.

The most pertinent contributing factor in any sight fishing endeavor is unquestionably weather. While our visit corresponded with the fringe of the rainy-season, our days were generally clear and cloudless with wind never a contributing factor, very similar to a Corona commercial.

El Pescador also offers numerous activities for their non-fishing guests to enjoy. Bicycling, kayaking, snorkeling, diving or just plain vegging by the pool are alternatives to spending a guided day on the flats, making EP the perfect destination for couples as well as hardcore anglers.

Keep in mind that in past year's it has been El Pescador's policy to offer substantial savings during the off season, August 1 through December 15.
