El Pescador marks its beginnings as an undeveloped beachfront owned by a Dr. Curran of California. The land was purchased sight-unseen from Dr. Curran in 1972 by Juergen and Kathleen Krueger from an aerial photograph of the island.

As Juergen Krueger was forming plans for the lodge design, he developed a rapport with the local Mennonites due to his ability to speak their Platt Deutsch language. Krueger negotiated with the Mennonites for the best lumber for the construction of the lodge. In May of 1973, a barge arrived with the lumber to begin construction. Krueger obviously got what he was looking for. To everyone's amazement, the hardwood was so dense it sunk as it was off-loaded from a barge at the beach and a human chain was necessary to complete the task of getting it onshore.

On September 4th 1974, the first guests checked into the newly finished lodge. The two parties checking in had arrived on the same flight and there was nearly an argument over who got to sign the guest register first. Dr. MacIntosh who was on R&R after volunteering in Belize City after the hurricanes, and Mr. & Mrs. John Gerlach from Wisconsin were the first in a long history of travelers to visit, and return, to the El Pescador lodge.

In 1997, the world-renouned fishing lodge was purchased by brother and sister Logan and Ali Gentry. In 2004 Ali's parents, Chris and Steve Spiro joined her in Belize. The recently constructed one, two and three bedroom luxury villas add a completely new and unique dimention to the El Pescador experience for anglers seeking privacy with all the amenities of the original lodge. EP's fame as a flats fisherman's paradise, as well as a resort for all adventures Belize, continues to grow and improve with time.

THE FISHING

At El Pescador you can achieve the fly-anglers' ultimate dream - the Grand Slam of bonefish, tarpon and permit. Belize's shallow water encompasses the only classic tarpon flats south of Florida. These flats are world renowned for offering the opportunity to site cast to tarpon throughout the entire year. You can prospect the lagoons for lady fish or snook, canvass deeper water for tuna and wahoo, or troll the reef for king fish and barracuda, the choice is yours.

BONEFISH (8 or 9 Weight Rods)
The bonefish grounds are only minutes from the lodge. Most of the fishing is done from the bow of the boat, however there are flats that can be waded as well. The bonefish average 2 - 5 lbs and are generally eager and plentiful. Lower tide situations will often find them "tailing" or "mudding" an experience unparelleled in sight-fishing.

TARPON (10-12 Weight Rods)
The El Pescador fishery maintains a year round resident tarpon population with individuals in excess of 100 lbs. The fish are spread out over a 250 square mile fishery. In the late summer (July thru September) local numbers are bolstered by an influx of migratory fish that doubles the tarpon cencus. We have personally experienced stellar tarpon fishing during our traditional late summer-early fall visits that happen to coincide with optimum waether conditions.

PERMIT (9-10 Weight Rods)
Permit can be located on numerous bonefish flats, and on many of the tarpon flats as well. Many permit are generally located in larger schools and range from 4 - 30 lbs, with the majority averaging about 8 - 10 lbs. Jack crevalle, horse-eye jacks, barracuda, cobia and snook are also found on the flats and in the surrounding mangrove lagoons.

NON-GUIDED FISHING
El Pescador maintains kayaks and canoes which provide access to an extensive system of lagoons located behind the property where you can enjoy a few hours of bonefishing in absolute solitude. These boats are available at no charge to El Pescador guests and can be secured by simple request. EP will give you some basic guidance and directions, and then you are off for your own bonefish or nature adventure.

CATCH-AND RELEASE
In the event that you are unaware of the latest developments, bonefish, tarpon and permit have achieved gamefish status within Belizian waters. This legislation was installed to protect the fishery from overharvest and insure uncompromised game fishing well into the future. While, on occasion, some snook, snapper, barracuda and grouper are kept for the table all gamefish will be released expeditiously and unharmed.

Belize is a neo-tropical climate, so air temperature varies less than 10 degrees F year round. Rather than seasons they experience micro climate changes, subjecting the country to occasional cold fronts during the winter months. Wind is also a component of thier tropical environment; some days are windy, some are not. Contrary to belief, Belize is also semi-arid and normally receives less than 25 inches of rain annually. This unique type of climate insures a fishery that is both diverse as well as abundant.

REQUEST A QUOTE?
If you desire a quote we would be happy to expedite your request at no obligation. Simply e-mail us at lower40@verizon.net with the number in your party, duration of your stay (with arrival and departure dates) and number of guided fishing days you will require.

Generally speaking, peak angling for all flats species usually occurs during the months of April through June. Good to very good fishing can be expected at any time throughout the remainder of the calendar year.
