THE FLY FISHERS LEXICON
(A glossary of fly fishing rhetoric)

In an effort to aid the general population in their attempt to better comprehend this non-conventional approach to angling we call fly fishing, we have assembled a comprehensive summary of the more frequently utilized phrases, retorts and quips with an interpretive definition. While this jargon can be quite foreign to the average layman, this diatribe should offer a semblance of understanding if encountered under a social setting.

Righty: "Yep, took 'em on a size 28 parachute Adams."
Definition: Missed a strike on a size 6 wooly bugger.

Righty: "Been fly fishin for over 40 years."
Definition: I’ve actually fished 40 times since 1960.

Righty: "Took 7 fish at the bridge hole last night."
Definition: 4 dace, 2 suckers, and a Snickers wrapper.

Righty: "Tied up this tiny blue-winged olive."
Definition: I’m a $1.95 lighter.

Righty: "That brown I took had to be 20" long."
Definition: Saw a 10" brown rise to a cigarette butt.

Righty: "I’m goin back out west for a week this year."
Definition: Taking the family to West Springfield to visit the in-laws.

Righty: "I can lay out over 90 feet of fly line."
Definition: It takes 3 casts to do it (30X3).

Righty: "My wife let’s me fish whenever I want."
Definition: Divorced in 1977.

Righty: "Used to fish with Lee Wulff back in the 60’s."
Definition: Perused and article he wrote in 1975.

Righty: "Now a days I use nothin but dry flies."
Definition: Has a 1/0 Deceiver drying on his vest patch.
