In a move
designed to benefit the financial position of the popular fly tying
organization, The New England Fly Tyers, traditional Monday evening
gatherings are now being staged at the Eight Point Sportsmen’s Club,
located just off of Rt. 140 in Sterling. Meeting times are 7-9PM every
Monday and are opened to the general public. The club has long catered
to entry level as well as experienced fly tyers and sponsors annual
events such as; beginners fly tying classes, complete with a video
manual, fall rod building classes, a free member’s dinner, a Ware
River family outing, and weekly raffles among other things. The initial
meeting of the autumn season was held on Monday, September 10th
with over 30 members in attendance. We encourage readers to take
advantage of the club’s hospitality and kindly approach to the
promotion of the sport.
DEERFIELD
With the current state of affairs it has been awhile since our last
report from this once hallowed watershed. Two groups of unrelated
anglers recently visited the river with similar results. In both
occasions water levels were near perfect (125 cfs) throughout much of
the day, which in itself was very peculiar. Water temperatures were in
the mid 70’s with little, if any, surface activity and few insects.
Each party was rewarded with only 2 specimens for their efforts, despite
their diversified tactics. Recently it has been very difficult to
surmise exactly what has happened to the fishery.
THOMAS BASIN
With cooler water being discharged from the Quabbin Aqueduct, the
Thomas Basin, located along the River Road section of the Quinapoxet
River, has begun to give up a few landlocked salmon along with a number
of browns and rainbows. The water release has been fairly consistent in
recent weeks prompting salmonoids to take advantage of the highly
oxygenated and cooler habitat. Quartered smelt imitations (6-10) left to
"swim" in the current are generally the most productive autumn
subsurface patterns, while smaller caddis dry flies (16-20) will usually
account for most surface caught fish.
Good fishing and safe
wading,
JB
