MILLERS HOLDS UP

August 4, 2005 -Well it's already mid-summer and reports originating from the Millers River have been nothing short of amazing. I recently had the opportunity to chat with Mat Piwowarski, an angler that we turned onto the fishery last season, and a person that has become an ardent fan of the watershed. Mat has been frequenting the Wendall Depot area along Rt. 2A just outside of West Orange and has been experiencing fantastic dry fly fishing near the Osgood Brook and Whetstone Brook tailouts. Since the headwaters of both brooks originate at altitude they enter the main system at considerably less water temperature than the Millers, often encouraging fish to congregate near the outlets.

Piwowarski explains that this is definitely the case this year as his deliberately delivered elk hair caddis is bringing splashy rises from both brown and rainbows just prior to nightfall. On one recent session Mat spoke with a fellow angler that routinely fishes the river, despite residing in a Boston burb, that took nearly 20 fish just adjacent to the Whetstone Brook outlet. Mat also cautions anglers that the system is virtually dead from late morning to late afternoon, with dawn and dusk offering the best chance for success.

If you plan on making the trek you would be best to consider elk hairs (14-16), Hemmingway caddis (14-16), slick water caddis (14-16), Solomon caddis pupa (14-16) and latex caddis pupa (14-16) as the most successful producers.

LABRADOR
John McCarthy of Springfield has recently returned to his beloved Labrador for a few weeks of R&R. Longtime friend and fly fishing bum, Vic Dennet of Worcester accompanied him.

We just fielded a phone call from Captain Bob Salerno of Berlin, Connecticut who is also making Labrador the focus of his summertime angling.

CATCH BOXES
The local TU chapter is deriving plans to install catch report boxes along the Quinnapoxit River in Holden. The boxes will be used to gather catch information from anglers in an effort to better understand the watershed and it's potential to support a landlocked salmon fishery as well as to monitor all coldwater species. All anglers will be encouraged to fill out catch history information.

Good fishing and safe wading,
