IMPOUNDMENTS SHINE

May 30, 2007 - While patiently waiting for water levels to recede a bit many fly fisherman have directed their attention to impoundments to cure their disease. Matt Piwowarski of Webster, Mass has been frequenting the confines of Wallum Lake in nearby Douglas. While trolling is not his favorite method of pursuing coldwater species, one must resort to dire means in dire times. Matt has been utilizing a cadre of traditional Maine trolling streamers (the Ghost series are most popular), trolled slowly just under the surface to get results. This season he has brought numerous brown and rainbow trout as well as brood stock landlocked salmon to net.

CONNER POND
Conner Pond is really the East Branch of the Swift River that ponds-up adjacent to Rt. 122 in Petersham, Mass approximately 45 minutes from downtown Worcester. Felix Stolulonis and Lenny Renauld have been routinely visiting the impoundment for a few weeks now with extremely good results. Calm days will find excellent hatches of chronomids that can be mimicked by quill body wet flies retrieved slowly just below the surface film. The brook trout and rainbow trout the duo have been tempting will show preference to subsurface presentations even though adults seem to be dominating the venue. One recent outing yielded in the vicinity of 25-30 trout to these well-seasoned fly anglers.

THE QUINNIE
With water approaching optimum levels Mike Keller recently decided to revisit one of his old stomping grounds, The Quinapoxet River in Holden. Mike is very familiar with the Trout Brook section of the watershed and would make the "cable pool" (the confluence of booth rivers) the focal point of his efforts on this day. Faced with the dilemma of complex hatching activity (both mayfly and caddis in abundance, but no rising fish) Keller elected to employ a series of nymphs to accomplish his task. Mike enjoyed hours of productive fishing to both brown and rainbow trout that were eager to accept his offerings.

YOUTH DAY
On Saturday June 9th Trout Unlimited will hold their 5th Annual Youth Day at Holden's Trout Brook Park from 10 AM- 3 PM. Kids will get casting lessons, tie a fly with instructors help, see an aquatic insect display to learn about trout food and try to catch a trout at the park's pond. If members could volunteer to assist for anytime during the day we would appreciate the help. So bring your kids, grandchildren or neighbors kid or just come and help.

On Thursday June 14th Trout Unlimited members will meet at the Quinnie parking lot near the dam at approximately 5:30-6:00 for a quick sandwich (BYOS) and then we will spend the evening fishing on " our home water". This is a good way to meet other members and to get familiar with the river and maybe catch a nice brookie.

Good fishing and safe wading,
JB
