PERFECT
WATER
June 8, 2007
- With the exception of the
Swift River (which at last check was about 250 CFS and dropping) area
watersheds are approaching almost perfect water conditions. There should
be less and less concern about water levels and more trepidation about
warming water as we approach the middle of the month. The Quinnie
continues to be our MVP among central Massachusetts's waters as it
received a supplemental stocking post-Memorial Day that supplemented an
already liberal population of previous stocked fish and native brook
trout.
The Millers River, at the
gauging station in Erving, is registering in the 650 CFS area that is
almost identical to the 90-year mean on June 8th. In past years, this
watershed has held up nicely even through the torrid months of July and
August, often producing good results right on through the summer.
THE HATCHES
Look for the following insects as we approach the middle of June… Tan
and Black Caddis (14-16), BWO's 18-20 (I would expect to experience this
insect from now until the season wanes sometime in November), March
Brown (10-12), Light Cahill (12-14) and of coarse ants, beetles and
crickets. Another pattern that has taken the Northeast by storm is the
Copper John. This pattern is productive under a number of conditions and
should be a constant producer throughout the entire season. Our best
selling colors have been, blue, copper, red and peacock. It's basically
a take-off on a traditional looking mayfly nymph with gold bead head,
biot tail and epoxy wing case.
