AUTUMN PREVIEW

August 27, 2008 - Well things are finally returning back to normal concerning central Mass water levels and local fly anglers are rejoicing. Even water temperatures have "peaked out" for the season and with the cooler overnight sessions we've been experiencing combined with decreasing daylight, they should continue their downward trend.

Charlie Peters took a recent spin to the Wendall Depot area of the Millers River and is reporting 70-degree water temperature and near perfect water flow (somewhere in the 200 cfs area). This is certain to be one of those years that anglers can expect spring planted trout to survive the summer months, at least on this watershed. Look for this watershed to receive additional fish sometime during the month of September.

The Deerfield River system, literally unfishable throughout the entire summer is slowly returning to normalcy. The tailwater has been maintaining discharges somewhere in the 150-200 cfs range during morning periods, with discharges of about 1000 cfs occurring during the early afternoon. This will allow for brief periods of optimum wading potential prior to midday, something the Deerfield hasn't experienced for sometime. This river is unquestionably one of the most esthetically pleasing watersheds in the entire state once we enter late September and throughout the autumn season. We are looking for a sensational autumn season on this watershed due to the lack of summer pressure and additional fall stockings.

Local TU czar, Larry Bush, recently introduced Alejandro D'Aquinto to the Swift River in Belchertown and it looks like the young man faired quite nicely, thank you. See photo insert.

About a week ago the water discharge was dropped to about 80 cfs creating some even more challenging fishing conditions. At last check the system is maintaining water in the mid-60 cfs range, which we would consider very low. Autumn is certainly the most revered time among river regs, offering spectacular scenery, cold water and rewarding fishing opportunities. Look for this watershed to receive additional fish sometime around the end of the month.

Good fishing and safe wading,
JB
