THE
FARMINGTON UNPLUGGED
April 29, 2010
- Fresh off their initial sojourn to the Farmington River in
Connecticut, local anglers Ian Roberts and Mike Dame recently filed this
report…
"Just took a few minutes to write up this report, hope you can use
it.
Last week Ian Roberts and myself made our second weeklong trip to the
Farmington River in Connecticut. We spent the week camping at American
Legion State Forest. After months of fishing #20 and smaller flies
subsurface at the Swift River in Belchertown we had high hopes of fish
rising to big, juicy Hendricksons and we weren't disappointed. The first
day we were there we found both Hendricksons #14 and Red Quills #16 on
schedule, mid afternoon at the Pipeline Pool. Ian was the first onto
fish using #12 and #14 reddish brown soft hackles, imitative of
Hendrickson emergers. Then when the fish started taking duns we did well
with Red Quills #16. Later in the day we would head to the Church Pool
and fish the last of the duns and the subsequent spinner fall. Some days
the hatch was heavier than others but each day we caught fish. By the
end of the week we had caught at least a hundred fish between us. Two of
the bigger fish were a "pig" that Ian hooked on a Hendrickson
nymph and a 20" brown I took on a Red Quill. It's great to be dry
fly fishing again!"

STOCKING CONTINUES
Area watersheds scheduled to be stocked this week include, the Tully
River in Athol, Mill River in Blackstone, Little River in Charlton,
Moose Brook in Hardwick, Quinapoxet River on Holden, Mill River in
Mendon and Milford, Parker Brook in Oakham, French and Little Rivers in
Oxford, Stillwater River in Princeton and Sterling, Lawrence and Scott
Brooks in Royalston, Turkey Hill Brook in Spencer, Otter River in
Templeton and Millers River, Priest Brook and Tarbell Brook in
Winchendon.
THE HATCHES
When traveling about during the next week I wouldn't be without BWO's
(18-20), Summer Caddis (a good facsimile would be Elk Hair (16), Slick
Water Caddis (16) or Hemmingway Caddis (16)), Light Hendrickson (14) and
Red Quill (16). The upcoming week should provide stellar dry fly fishing
to these insects, particularly during afternoon periods of warmth.
LOWER FORTY CASTING
101
We would just like to take this opportunity to thank all those aspiring
anglers that took part in last Saturday's fly casting clinic here at the
Lower Forty. Not only was the class treated to some premier weather
conditions, the feedback from the day's events has been exceptional.
Many thanks to… Leonardo, Anthony, Kate, Mark, Dick, Deemo, Jim, Thom,
Sam, Alan and Mal.
Good fishing and safe
wading,
JB
