AN EYE TO THE WEST October 6, 2011 - With all the funky water here in central New England many anglers are in the process of planning campaigns to the Salmon River in Pulaski, New York. As of this writing we are in the midst of the fall salmon run that has only marginal appeal for many of the regions long rodders. It is the steelhead that commands the attention of a cadre of central Mass anglers. During the previous few weeks "chromers" have been filtering into the system so, while it maybe be a bit early to expect stellar outings, you can anticipate reasonable results. Traditionally most steelies will fall into the 7-12lb. category, and a 20lber should get you a snapshot with the governor. Due to the nature of the fishery most anglers prefer longer rods ranging from 7 to 9 weight complemented by a high quality, large arbor, disc drag reel accompanied by 150 yards of 20lb micron backing at the minimum. Spey and switch rods have been gaining popularity over the previous few years due to the fact that they enable accomplished fly-fishermen to effectively cover water in an efficient manner. These fish are notorious tackle thrashers so lengthy, physical confrontations can be expected. On the terminal side, it would not be uncommon for river regulars to tip their 9-foot leaders with 6lb test fluorocarbon in an effort to conceal their offerings. Some of the most successful fly patterns can also be the simplest. Wooly buggers, black and brown stone flies, prince nymphs, hare's ears, crystal meth, crystal bullets and egg imitations are all extremely popular just to mention a few. Angling usually commences in earnest during the earlier stages of November and continues throughout the winter months. Recent years have produced dramatic runs of these spectacular fish and anglers are experiencing some of the most preeminent big game fishing opportunities they will experience in a lifetime.
