HARD
TAILS / HARD TALE
September 12, 2001 - During mid
September it has been very difficult to experience consistent fishing
too both false albacore and bonito along the Cape’s south side.
Traditionally the third week of the month signals the peak of the exotic
season, however, only modest catch reports have been filed by many ocean
side patrons. The best opportunity for success can be located in tidal
areas surrounding the Vineyard or within close proximity to the north
facing shoreline. With calming seas and consistent weather look for
things to improve dramatically within a weeks time. Bonito Bunnies and
sparsely dressed Clousers have been the most productive weapons when
migrants are located.
BAYSIDE BLUES
There’s no argument that the 2001 season has undergone an influx
of bluefish. Recently chatted with CC veteran, Len Renauld of Sterling,
and he recanted an episode where an extraordinary population of 8-10lb
specimens were located at the mouth of the Pamet River in Truro. These
fish were not selective and were easy targets for the skilled angler.
Generally, all inshore areas of the Cape continue to be invaded by the
intruders which can supplement an otherwise unproductive outing. I
personally have encountered fortuitous groups of choppers throughout the
entire summer, many times in areas where I have never witnessed their
presence before.
‘THAR SHE BLOWS’
A relentless southern blow had all but ceased coastal fishing
through this past weekend, but the likelihood of calmer seas and gentler
winds give cause for promise as the fall migration commences. If you
have yet to experience what the early fall season has to offer,
"shame on you." This can be, without question, the most
rewarding period of the entire season. Migrating species are generally
less meticulous about fly selection and are hoarded conveniently
together in vast opportunistic schools. Fishing pressure has now been
reduced to the hard core ilk. No pesky "greenies" or
"no-see-ums" to deal with. Gone are the populace of upwardly
mobile. Once patrolled beach fronts where a sentry took up residence are
now opened playgrounds. It is a great time of year.
Good fishing and safe
wading,
JB
