THE
ALBIE INVASION
September 5, 2002
- During the previous few
days we have fielded numerous reports of false albacore invading
Vineyard Sound from Cuttyhunk to Cotuit. It has not been uncommon for
boat anglers to encounter 25-50 individual groups while canvassing this
area. Generally fish have been in the 7-9-lb. bracket and the prevailing
forage has been juvie menhaden. Keep in mind that this is a "here
today, gone tomorrow" style of fly-fishing and what applies one
moment may not necessarily set the tone for the immediate future. In
general we would expect the migration to continue for a few more weeks
and culminate around the fourth week of September. Fish should be
present in the rips off of Chatham and the Monomoy-South Beach cut by
week's end if not sooner before initiating their return journey.
THE SURF
This is certainly the time of year that dedicated surf flyrodders
relish. It is very common for larger stripers and bluefish to "run
the surf line" in pursuit of the abundant bait (sand eels,
silversides, peanut bunker) that take refuge along the existing
structure that is present. It is also a time when fly selection becomes
less critical and the game becomes one of locating fish and their
feeding level. An overcast, rainy or foggy atmosphere can be responsible
for producing some of the most gratifying fishing opportunities of the
season. Popular beaches that are favored by surf guys include: Head of
the Meadow, Coast Guard, Longnook, and Ballston in Truro; Newcomb
Hollow, Cahoon Hollow and Marconi in Wellfleet; Nauset in Orleans; and
South Beach in Chatham.

THE FLATS
In response to the many queries regarding flats fishing possibilities in
Chatham during the month of September. Keep in mind that every year
varies. In general, during the southern migration, it is uncommon to
find fish on the flats in their late spring and summer numbers much
beyond the middle of the month. The end of the month will certainly
signal the conclusion of sight fishing for another year. We would
recommend that you begin to focus your attention to the surf, river
outlets, bottlenecks, and estuaries for consistent success.
Good fishing and safe
wading,
