WIANNO WOWS 'EM

June 4, 2003 - Acting on our recommendation, central Mass resident Mike Mahood was seeking to join the ever-increasing ranks of saltwater fly anglers. We suggested he peruse the south facing beaches of Wianno in Barnstable, an area long noted for its early season striper and bluefish activity. He files this brief report…

"You were right about the spot at Seaview Drive. The fishing was fantastic. Caught 6 blues 4 stripers of which 3 were 27-28 inches. Lost a big one that frayed my leader…"

When the weather has cooperated and the prevailing wind has been out of the south feedback such as this has become quite common during the previous few weeks as the shore angling has broken wide open in all areas of the Cape Cod including the bay.

THINKING OF CHATHAM?
If you're a novice angler or a seasoned vet looking to explore new turf we urge you to give the elbow a shot. Without question what could speed-up the learning curve is a knowledgeable and skilled shore guide. Good friend, Dave Pearson, has thrown his hat into the guiding ring and is now offering some very attractive full day wading packages geared to every level of fly fishing accomplishment. Initial feedback from customers has been fantastic. Whether its sight fishing, fishing the surf or blind casting one of the many channels Dave's temperament and knowledge of the area makes him a home run when considering a guiding service. A full day trip for two anglers is $250 excluding your much-appreciated tip. Dave Pearson can be reached at dpearson@omnisky.net or by phone at 508.634.1561.

JOE MAC CHECKS IN
Longtime customer, Joe NcNamara, enjoyed some delightful springtime action and files this report…

"Just a note from RI. The bay is full of bass and blues are just starting to show. Took my 4 year old out with a guide… First cast with the guide he lands his first striper (11lbs) while I hook up a smaller version on the fly. In the end he took 3 "keepers" (none kept), several blues and a few smaller linesiders. Dad didn't do as well, too busy watching him have the time of his life…"

Now that Joe lives by the sea we don't get to visit with him that often. Seems like he has things fully under control.

WELLFLEET
It took a while but we are finally starting to hear a lot of positive rumblings originating from the bay. Had a brief chat with Capt. Kevin Coakley and he confirmed that large bass can be found in close from Jeremy Point to the Pamet River. He and a friend canvassed the area this past weekend and took many bass ranging in size from low 20's to mid 30's while boat fishing. On the high tide the stripers were so close to shore that their flies literally landed on the gravel and dragged into the first curl. This aesthetically pleasing area could offer the best wading possibility for the next 3 or 4 weeks. I've already penciled in a weekend trip.

Good fishing and safe wading,
JB
