BAYSIDE BONANZA

May 25, 2006 - Bayside guide, Captain Kevin Coakley, checked in recently and reports that the waters he generally patrols around Jeremy Point in Wellfleet has been choked with keeper-sized bass. While on a busman's holiday this past weekend Coakley coaxed numerous linesiders to hand, the largest was a 36-inch brute (and he had the striper thumb to prove it).

It seems that no matter what piece of real estate anglers toiled over the past weekend all reports had the reoccurring theme, fish and plenty of them.

Paul Clark of Whitinsville reports that he and angling bud Jack found many willing combatants while wading the shoreline of Lieutenant's Island in Wellfleet. Fish were in the mid-20's range and not particularly fussy regarding fly selection.

"A fish a cast" was the way Dave Surdel described the action he found at the infamous "bathtub" in Chatham. This has been one of the most productive and reliable areas of the entire Cape, particularly during the early season. Look for bluefish to inhabit this fishery within the week adding to the fray.

Mike Peluso of Oakham and Dave Armstrong of Hudson encountered a monster clam worm hatch within the confines of Shoestring Bay and Simons Narrows in Mashpee. The duo utilized Mike's canoe to access the action, which rivaled anything they have encounter to date. I was held witness to some pretty impressive cell phone photos as the stripers appeared to be in the 30-34" range. 'We lost count" was one of the comments pitched in my direction.

An interesting aside to the outing was the fact that the fish were not selective to the hatching worms, as is generally the case when encountering this event. Their offerings of generally nonspecific saltwater patterns were effective to say the least.

Mike returned to the scene of the crime as a solo on Saturday and only took in the vicinity of 12 fish. Have we become so jaded that this is now looked upon as being only a fair day?

Look for larger contingents of larger fish to continue to filter through as we enter June. I have yet to receive many south side reports of bluefish so I do suspect that the cooler weather may have factored into the equation.

Good fishing and safe wading,
JB
