THE BREAK

May 1, 2007 - Unless your head is deeply imbedded within some orifice of your body the big news originating from Cape Cod way is the new break located within the confines of National Seashore commonly referred to as Nauset Beach. This extraordinary event was attributed to the 5-day northeaster that pounded virtually all south-facing beaches leaving shifting sand and destruction in its wake.

A cadre of locals very familiar with this real estate coincidentally gathered at The Lower Forty over the weekend to discuss the repercussions of an event of this magnitude. The general consensus was that the increased flow of colder ocean water and increased water volume would do nothing but enhanced the late spring and summer fishery within Pleasant Bay. While this episode is only very minor in proportion, Pleasant Bay can use all the held it can get as this once prolific summer fishery has been sentenced to very warm water and only marginal striped bass habitat particularly as the season matures.

TWINKIES
We have received only a few reports of angler success with migratory fish. Dennis resident, John Amiro offered his opinion of low water temperatures (generally in the 40 degree vicinity) and unsettled weather as the reason for the delay. Amiro is noted among locals for his accurate fishing logs and commented that April 11th of last year was the date of his initial success. The venue was the Bass River in Dennis where the angler persuaded about 50 fresh twinkies to his offerings.

Moderate, more seasonal air temperatures should contribute to the situation and we wouldn't be surprised to see significant improvement by week's end.

Good fishing and safe wading,
JB
