THEY'VE GOT THE BLUES
During previous July campaigns it has not been uncommon to locate copious throngs of touring bluefish while angling with good friend and guide, Capt. Kevin Coakley of Weelfleet. These were bona fide acrobats often requiring a 10 weight to tame (34-38" measured). Most of the fishing transpired in 3-5 feet of water on average and was accomplished with floating lines and an array of poppers, sliders and gurglers. Despite traditionally stained water and when conditions cooperated, we were actually able to utilize sight-fishing techniques, supplementing the already grand indulgence. It seems my two mates beat me to the punch this past weekend as they enjoyed some of the finest bluefish angling Cape Cod has to offer (witness photo). For those that snub these admirable game fish you are truly foregoing the opportunity to do combat with one of the foremost fly rod adversaries of the sea. While were on the subject of Weelfleet, Capt. Coakley reports that striped bass have been "hanging-in" both weeded, shallow water areas as well as Billingsgate Shoal in Weelfleet. During normal years, with the exception of a few school fish, striped bass would migrate to deeper, cooler water where habitat and forage was more suitable. Not hearing a lot of good things originating from the wading anglers prospecting the North Monomoy environs. It seems like the area has reverted back to more typical summertime status with only a few fish being taken hear and there.
