STILL WAITING

September 30, 2009 - As we enter the month of October the general consensus among many saltwater zealots, me included, is that the infamous striped bass southward migration has yet to materialize. While I have always contended that this is somewhat of an overrated affair, anglers should be able to expect another 3-5 weeks of pretty fair fishing at the minimum.

The south side of Cape Cod has been a ghost town. There have been a few random groups of hardtails, but striped bass and bluefish (with the exception of snappers) have been, for the most part, lacking.

To further perplex fly fishermen has been the small window of opportunity. That traditional late September blow that can frustrate wading anglers as well as small craft fishermen was so evident during the latter part of the month that it kept many off the water entirely.

I really wish I could be more positive in this report but that is certainly not the case. With water temperature dropping into the low-60's hopefully the next installment will be a bit more encouraging.

Good fishing and safe wading,
JB
