MORE HEAT

July 17, 2010 - With the risk of becoming redundant, the recent heat wave has certainly curtailed (if not broken the spirit of) the fly fishing activity at least temporarily. I really can't remember an extended period of time during the striped season that has resulted in a distinct lack of activity, particularly among shore bound anglers.

It may be just a tad early but I wouldn't be surprised to witness a few false albacore and bonito to begin showing up in Vineyard Sound. Rumor has it that a few Spanish Macs have been taken within the boarders of our southern neighbors and wouldn't they be a welcome addition to our current menu? A few years ago we were fortunate enough to experience an exceptional late summer migration of these worthy game fish. They not only give a great account of themselves but are outstanding table fare as well. Another point worth mentioning should you encounter this species, you will require bit guards of some configuration. While not possessing quite the formidable dentures common to bluefish, macs do have a few rows of teeth capable of detaching fly from leader so be forewarned.

To reiterate knowledge we have gained from previous years, you will do markedly better employing more diminutive (#1-#4) imitations when pursuing both albies and bonito. Patterns such as Bonito Magic, Mini Candy, Gold Bay Anchovy and smaller Clouser Minnows would be my choice. These fish are rarely on our more abundant forage, sand eels and silversides, and typically focus on other forms of migrating baits.

Good fishing and safe wading,
JB
